1. Q: What is U.are.U
Pro?
A: The U.are.U
Pro Fingerprint Security System frees
corporations from the burden and limitation
of password-based security. The system
includes a workstation package, which
contains software and a USB sensor, and
is supported by optional server-based
software. U.are.U Pro is a complete, plug-and-play
solution that heightens security, reduces
costs and increases convenience by replacing
passwords with the touch of a finger.
U.are.U Pro can be used for a single workstation
or deployed with U.are.U Pro Server for
centralized security and management.
2. Q: What is the
difference between Pro Workstation and
Server?
A: U.are.U Pro
Workstation is the client portion of the
U.are.U Pro suite that includes all the
applications to replace passwords with
the touch of a finger. It is a complete
package that can work with or without
a Pro Server. Pro Workstation provides
all the user applications and sensor software
for a single workstation. It also automically
detects the Pro Server (if installed)
and acts as the client.
U.are.U Pro Server
is a server application designed to run
silently on a Windows domain controller.
It handles all the coordination of accounts
with the Windows database, centrally enforces
biometric security, enables user roaming
in a network and provides a centralized
database for easier management. Additionally,
U.are.U Pro Server supports database replication
to backup servers in the network.
3. Q: What are
the system requirements?
A: Your software
comes with a readme.txt file which includes
the latest system requirements for that
particular release. You should always
check this file to verify them.
Currently, the
latest requirements for U.are.U Pro Workstation*
are:
Pentium processor
64 MB RAM
30 MB free hard disk space
USB port
Windows XP, 2000, NT with Service Pack
4.0 or later, Me or 98
Internet Explorer 5.5 or later
The current U.are.U
Pro Server minimum system requirements
are:
Pentium processor
32MB RAM
Windows NT Server with Service Pack 4.0
or later configured as a PDC or BDC*,
or Windows 2000 Server configured as an
Active Directory mixed mode domain controller.
* BDC installation
will allow for biometric replication to
that BDC.
4. Q: What kind of Network Operating Systems
does Pro support?
A: U.are.U Pro
Workstation supports logon to Windows
NT 4.0, Windows 2000 (mixed mode) and
Novell networks (required Microsoft Novell
client). The optional U.are.U Pro Server
software supports Windows NT 4.0 and Windows
2000 servers only. Logon to UNIX application
servers from Window's clients is supported
through the One Touch Internet application
included with U.are.U Pro Workstation.
5. Q: What languages
does U.are.U Pro support?
A: U.are.U Pro
is translated into the following languages:
- English
- French
- Italian
- German
- Spanish
- Chinese (Taiwan)
- Korean
You do not need
to purchase a special translated version.
Pick the language you would like to use
when you install the software.
6. Q: How is Private
Space Installed?
A: The Private
Space does not automatically install.
To install the Private Space, use Windows
Explorer, locate the Private Space setup.exe
file -- located in the Private Space folder
-- on the CD-ROM and double-click it to
install Private Space. You must run the
version of Private Space that was included
on the CD with your installed version
of U.are.U Pro to ensure proper functionality.
7. Q: Can I upgrade
from Deluxe to Pro Workstation?
A: U.are.U Deluxe
users cannot upgrade to U.are.U Pro Workstation,
but DigitalPersona does offer special
pricing for Deluxe users to purchase Pro.
U.are.U Pro offers the same set of basic
features as U.are.U Deluxe, but adds support
for server-based administration, more
operating systems and other features.
You will receive the Pro Workstation CD
along with the appropriate documentation.
Pro Workstation is backward-compatible
with previous sensors so you can continue
using the sensor provided with Deluxe.
You must uninstall Deluxe before installing
Pro Workstation. Contact DigitalPersona
for ordering information.
8. Q: During the
installation of U.are.U Pro 1.2, I am
prompted to remove all incompatible DigitalPersona
products. If I uninstall them, do I lose
my data?
A: The U.are.U
Pro 1.2 installer saves the data from
the incompatible products; however, to
access the data again, you must install
the latest version of each product.
9. Q: How do I
know what version of software I have?
A: Following are
instructions for two operating systems:
U.are.U Pro Workstation
(Windows 98/Me/NT/XP)
Right-click the DigitalPersona icon, located
on the right-hand side of the task bar,
then click About.
U.are.U Pro Server
and Pro Workstation (Windows 2000)
Locate the dphost.exe file and, on the
right-click menu, click Properties, then
the Versions tab.
10. Q: How do I
uninstall Pro?
A: In the Control
Panel, double-click Add/Remove Programs,
select the program "DigitalPersona
U.are.U Pro" in the list, then click
Remove.
11. Q: Does U.are.U
Pro support Netscape Communicator 6.0?
A: The One Touch
Internet feature does NOT work with Netscape
Communicator 6.0. It does work with previous
versions.
12. Q: What if
I can't find the Administrator Console
in the Start/Programs menu?
A: You must have
installed U.are.U Pro Workstation using
"Administrator Workstation"
to have the Administration tools installed.
If you can see other menu items for U.are.U
Pro in the Start/Programs menu, but not
the Administrator Console, you should
reinstall Pro Workstation and choose "Administrator
Workstation" during the installation.
13. Q: How do I
administer the system?
A: U.are.U Pro
has been designed with the needs of the
system administrator in mind. Administrators
who want to administer workstations or
domains must install the "Administrator
Workstation" option during the installation
of Pro Workstation. This will install
all the tools needed to administer the
entire system from a central computer.
Administration
options include remote installation and
configuration, security settings and access
policies:
System management
is performed with the Microsoft Management
Console (MMC) Snap-In. MMC is installed
by the Pro installer.
User management: Administrators can modify
and enroll users, define custom policies
and define user access policies for the
system.
You can find the Administrator Console
under Start > Programs > DigitalPersona
U.are.U Pro > Administrator Console.
14. Q: How can I give someone administrator
rights?
A: U.are.U Pro
uses the user permission specified in
Windows. That means that a user who is
part of the group "Administrators"
has administration privileges over users
of U.are.U Pro.
For Windows NT
and 2000, you can assign someone to the
group "Administrators" in the
User Manager. See the documentation that
came with your operating system software
for more information.
Windows 95/98/Me
does not have the ability to designate
someone as an administrator. In this case,
U.are.U Pro designates the first user
who installed U.are.U Pro Workstation
as the administrator of U.are.U Pro users.
That person can then grant others administrator
privileges using the U.are.U Administrator
Console. To do this, log in as the first
user, open Start > Programs > DigitalPersona
U.are.U Pro > Administrator Console.
Double-click the user you want to make
an administrator, click the Security tab
and, under Windows 95/98/Me System Options,
check the box to make the selected user
a U.are.U Administrator. Click Apply and
Close when finished.
15. Q: Does Pro
work with RAS?
A: Remote Access
Services are transparent to U.are.U Pro
and can be used like they were without
U.are.U Pro. Some administrators choose
to use One Touch Internet to store the
passwords for their user's dial-up connections
so they can be authenticated with the
user's fingerprint before using the RAS
client.
16. Q: How do I
use PCAnywhere with Pro Workstation?
A: U.are.U Pro
works with PCAnywhere. PCAnywhere must
be uninstalled and reinstalled for it
to correctly recognize Pro. You should
perform the following steps to use PCAnywhere
with Pro Workstation:
Before installing
or upgrading Pro, first uninstall PCAnywhere.
Install Pro Workstation.
Reinstall PCAnywhere.
You can now use PCAnywhere and remotely
log in to Pro Workstations using your
U.are.U password. Note: You can not use
the "repair" option when installing
PCAnywhere, it must be a full install.
17. Q: I want to
use Private Space with Pro on Windows
XP, but the feature seems to be missing.
A: The Windows
XP version of U.are.U Pro 1.2 does not
include Private Space. In the future,
new file encryption software will be released
for Windows XP.
18. Q: How do I
log on to a Windows domain with Pro Workstation?
A: Pro uses the
existing accounts in Windows. You can
log in to your domain with Pro by registering
your credentials in an account that is
a domain account and by using a workstation
that is configured to log in to your domain.
19. Q: What if
my computer automatically logs me in?
Can I use the Autologon feature in Windows
2000?
A: You must have
at least one user account created in Windows
to use U.are.U Pro. Windows Me and 2000
users cannot use the Autologon feature.
U.are.U creates a secure logon and must
log you in to a Windows account.
Perform the following
steps to configure your computer before
installation:
In Windows Me:
Go to Control Panel,
open Password, select "Users can
customize their preferences and desktop
settings. Windows switches to your personal
settings when you log in".
Restart the computer.
Create a user name and password to logon
(see your Microsoft documentation for
this process).
Log in with the Windows user name and
password.
Install the U.are.U Pro per directions.
In Windows 2000:
On the Start Menu,
click Run and type in "Regedit"
to open Registry Editor.
Go to the following path: \HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Winnt\CurrentVersion\Winlogon.
Set the "Autoadminlogon" value
from 1 to 0. If you are unfamiliar with
this process, consult the documentation
that came with your operating system.
In the Control Panel folder, open Users
and Passwords and set up a user name and
password.
Restart the computer.
Log in with the user name and password.
Install U.are.U Pro.
20. Q: Does U.are.U Pro support log on
to a Novell network?
A: Yes, Pro Workstation
can log you in to Novell accounts on Windows
98/Me/NT/2000/XP when using the Microsoft
Novell client. You cannot use the Novell
client from Novell. Our product simply
identifies you from your fingerprint,
then passes your Windows user name and
password to the primary network server.
Thus, our product
can be used to log in to a Novell server
provided that:
You install the
Microsoft Novell Client.
The Windows user name and password match
those used for logging in to the Novell
servers, and,
The user has a Windows user account (which
can be verified in the Users Control Panel).
Some Novell network users have installed
an NT Server running U.are.U Pro Server
so they can gain the central administration
and roaming capabilities of U.are.U Pro.
Please contact DigitalPersona for more
information on setting up this kind of
network.
21. Q: Will U.are.U
Pro integrate with Novell Servers?
A: We are investigating
support for Novell Servers, but have no
plans at this time.
22. Q: How does
One Touch Internet work?
A: One Touch Internet
can replace passwords and other requested
fields for almost any Windows application
or web site.
To use One Touch
Internet with an application or web site:
Open the application
or web site and hold down CTRL and touch
the sensor at the same time.
Type your information in the dialog box
and drag it to the field to which it belongs
on the application or web page. Repeat
as many times as needed until all required
fields are filled.
Save and name that web site or application
using the dialog box.
When you return to the same web site or
application, touch the sensor with your
finger to authenticate and One Touch Internet
will automatically submit that data when
you are properly authenticated.
There are literally
hundreds of ways web designers program
their sites or applications. One Touch
Internet contains sophisticated software
to detect and submit information to the
vast majority of these web sites and applications.
If you find one that you are having trouble
with, email DigitalPersona and we may
include the web site or application in
the next product release.
23. Q: Can I use
my One Touch Internet profiles when someone
else is logged on?
A: U.are.U Pro
is designed to be a session-based application,
which allows only the person logged in
to the workstation to replace passwords
with One Touch Internet.
There is a workaround
if you have less than ten users accessing
one workstation. Since you can register
up to 10 fingers for each Windows user's
account, you can create a user account
(which you could name - Group 1) and register
10 people, using one finger each. Each
one of those ten people will have access
to that session without having to log
out.
24. Q: Can I back
up my One Touch Internet profile?
A: No, your password
profiles are securely stored on your computer
or server. If you need to find your passwords,
you can find them by holding the CTRL
key and touching the sensor to authenticate.
When the One Touch Internet dialog box
opens, click Advanced to display all your
stored profiles.
25. Q: Can I set
up a different screen saver with One Touch
Unlock?
A: Yes, following
are instructions for each operating system:
Windows NT/2000/XP
In the Control
Panel folder, double-click Display.
On the Display Properties dialog box,
click the Screen Saver tab.
Select any screen saver other than the
OneTouch screen saver.
Click the Password protected button to
check it.
For Windows 98/Me
Since the screen will be disabled during
part of this process, print these instructions
before proceeding:
In the Control
Panel folder, double-click Display.
On the Display Properties dialog box,
click the Screen Saver tab.
Select any screen saver other than the
OneTouch screen saver.
Click the Password protected button to
check it.
Click the Change... button. In the Change
Password dialog box, enter a new password,
then enter it again in the Confirm new
password field. Remember this password
for registering in U.are.U later. Click
OK.
Click Apply in the Display Properties
dialog box.
Click the Preview button to start the
screen saver.
Move the mouse or press any key once.
The Windows Screen Saver dialog box appears.
Do NOT type the password; go to the next
step.
Hold down the CTRL key and place your
finger on the sensor.
In the One Touch Password dialog box,
enter the password you specified in step
6. The Autosend button should be checked.
Drag the password from the One Touch Password
dialog box and drop it on the password
field in the Windows Screen Saver dialog
box.
In the One Touch Password dialog box,
enter a description for the application,
such as the name of the screen saver.
Then, click the Add New button.
The password is
now registered.
The next time the screen saver runs, the
Windows Screen Saver password dialog box
is displayed by moving the mouse or pressing
any key. Place your finger on the sensor
to unlock the screen saver.
26. Q: Why does
my screen saver unlock automatically just
after I locked it?
A: This only happens
in earlier versions of Pro on Windows
95/98. By default, One Touch Unlock was
set to a 1 minute time-out before requiring
fingerprint authentication for the screen
saver. If you want to change this value
to always authenticate (or some other
time value), have your U.are.U administrator
change the policy in the U.are.U Administrator
Console by changing the Properties for
MainSystemLogon to always authenticate.
27. Q: How can
I shut off any of the sounds for U.are.U
Pro?
A: The sounds in
U.are.U Pro software cannot be disabled
or customized.
28. Q: How do I
create a Private Space?
A: After installing
the Private Space, the wizard guides you
through the Private Space setup. The limit
for Private Space is 2GB. You can create
up to 13 Private Spaces on one computer.
You can also create Private Spaces by
right-clicking the Private Space icon
on the task bar, then clicking Control
Center.
29. Q: How can
I backup my files in my Private Spaces?
A: Private Space
encrypts your files with a unique private
key generated during installation. This
key locks your information and prevents
others from seeing your data. This is
important to know because uninstalling
or reinstalling Private Space on Pro can
erase this key. Without this key, you
will not be able to open your files; however,
you can create a backup security key with
the Private Space that comes with Pro.
You can generate this backup key through
the Private Space Control Center under
Advanced.
Private Space is
meant to be a secure working environment
for sensitive files and is not meant to
function as the main file system of your
computer.
30. Q: How do I
use the backup recovery key?
A: To backup a
recovery key, open the Private Space Control
Center. Click on the Advanced button to
backup the recovery key. Save the recovery
key on a floppy disk.
To open Private
Space with the recovery key, insert the
disk in the floppy drive. Then, at the
MS-DOS command prompt, go to the Private
Space directory. By default, it is located
in C:\Program Files\DigitalPersona\U.are.U
Private Space 2.0 folder. While in the
Private Space directory, type the following
command:
dperswd - floppy
The Private Space
opens when the above command is executed.
Use Windows Explorer to access your Private
Space files.
31. Q: Can I export
my Private Space to another computer?
A: No, you cannot
export your Private Spaces because of
security reasons.
32. Q: What kind
of encryption is used with Private Space?
A: Private Space
uses Blowfish encryption with a 128-bit
key.
33. Q: Is there
a size limit for a Private Space?
A: Yes, there is
limit of 2GB for each Private Space. You
can create up to 13 Private Spaces on
one computer.
